Rowan Rye

Sourdough pulled from the oven before you're awake, coffee worth crossing the road for, and brunch that runs till close.

Baking on the Lane since 2018
Our story

A corner of the Lane that smells of warm bread by seven.

Rowan & Rye started with one deck oven, a second-hand espresso machine and a stubborn idea: that a neighbourhood deserves proper bread and proper coffee without the trek into town.

We mill and bake in the back before the buses start running — long-proved sourdough, laminated pastries, and whatever the season hands us. Out front it's an unfussy room: marble-topped tables, a big communal bench, and a corner that's yours whether you're here for ten minutes or the whole morning.

Everything on the counter is made a few feet from where you'll eat it. If it isn't good enough for us to eat, it doesn't go out.

Why Rowan & Rye

Made a few feet from where you'll eat it.

Baked, not bought-in

Sourdough, pastries and cakes are proved and baked in our own oven overnight. Nothing arrives frozen on a lorry.

Coffee done properly

A rotating house roast, dialled in through the day, poured by people who actually taste it. Oat milk's no extra.

Room to stay a while

Free Wi-Fi, plenty of plugs, a big communal bench and dogs welcome under the table. Come for a coffee, stay for the morning.

“The cardamom buns are dangerous. I've stopped pretending I only came for the coffee.”

Good to know

Frequently asked

Do you take bookings, or is it walk-in?

It's walk-in all day — grab any free table. We don't take reservations for the café, which keeps a spot open for regulars popping in. For larger groups or a morning takeover, email us and we'll sort something.

Are dogs welcome?

Always. There's a water bowl by the door and a jar of biscuits behind the counter. Well-behaved humans welcome too.

Is there veggie, vegan and gluten-free?

Plenty. Vegetarian dishes run right through the menu, there are vegan bakes and brunch options daily (look for the VG tag), and we keep a gluten-free bread for toasties and toast. Full allergen info is at the counter — just ask and we'll talk you through it.

Can I work from here — Wi-Fi and plugs?

Yes — free Wi-Fi, plugs along the communal bench, and no dirty looks for nursing a filter. We ask that laptops take a break at the busy weekend brunch rush so there's room for everyone.

Do you sell whole loaves and cakes to take away?

We do. Whole sourdough is on the shelf from opening until it sells out (it usually does — come early). Celebration cakes and party trays are made to order with a few days' notice by email.

Where exactly are you, and where do I park?

On the corner of Ashgrove Lane and Barley Row in Elderwick, four minutes' walk from Elderwick station. It's a pay-and-display street with free parking after 6pm and on Sundays, and there's a cycle rack right outside.
